College
offers lifeguard training
Do you know a teenager looking for a great job as a lifeguard? Saint
Joseph’s College is offering the American Red Cross certification
for Waterfront Lifeguarding, which teaches the skills to prevent and respond
to aquatic emergencies, including CPR and first aid.
Classes meet Monday, June 23, through Friday, June 27, from 8 a.m. to
3 p.m., at the Alfond Recreation Center on the Standish campus. The cost
is $350.
Participants must be at least 15 years old by June 27 and able to swim
500 meters without stopping. In addition, they need to pass an endurance
test which consists of the following:
- Swim five yards, submerge and retrieve three diving rings placed 5
yards apart in 4-7 feet of water, resurface and swim 5 yards to the
side of the pool;
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve
a 10- pound brick, return to the surface, swim 20 yards to the starting
point with the object and exit the water without using the ladder or
stairs within 100 seconds.
Persons attending all classes, scoring an 80 pecent or better on the
written test, and performing all water skills satisfactorily will receive
the American Red Cross Training certificates for Waterfront Lifeguarding
with First Aid and CPR/FRP-AED.
