COACH PROFILE

John Razsa returns for his third season, ninth overall, as the St. Joe's head volleyball coach. With 117 career victories, he is the winningest coach in SJC Vollyeball history.

Razsa possesses a wealth of volleyball experience and currently directs Portland North, Southern Maine’s Junior Olympic volleyball program.

During his first stint at St. Joe’s from 1992-97, Razsa compiled a 106-90 record, was named the Maine Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading St. Joseph's to a school record 27-10 mark, and guided the Monks to the MAC championship and the NAIA regional tournament in New York in 1996 and Pittsburgh in 1997. He was also named the MAC Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1997 and the State of Maine Intercollegiate Volleyball Coach of the Year in '95 and '96.

In addition to his stint at St. Joe’s, Razsa served as head coach at Southern Maine from 2003-2005 and was selected by his peers as the 2003 Coach of the Year in the Little East Conference and led the USM Huskies to a 19-12 overall record that year.

Prior to that, Razsa won multiple Maine State Volleyball Association Championships leading the boy’s and girl’s teams at Gray-New Gloucester High School in the late 80’s and mid 90’s. He also coached the U-Maine Men’s Club team and a Junior Olympic boy’s program for several years.

A 1982 University of Southern Maine graduate with a B.S. in Education, Razsa holds coaching Level I and II certifications from the United States Volleyball Association (USVA) and has taught in the Lisbon (Maine) school system.

ANDY POHL Assistant Coach Third Season

Andy Pohl was named as an Assistant Women’s Volleyball coach shortly after the start of the 2007 season.

Pohl is also a coach for Portland North, Maine’s foremost Junior Olympic volleyball program, where he coached his U16 team to the playoffs in 5 out of 6 tournaments and to the championship game in 3 of the tournaments during the 2007 season.

Coach Razsa commented that “hiring Andy Pohl as an assistant was like inviting a wonderful coaching presence to be with us every day and to add immensely to the ladies' experience of the sport. Andy demonstrates a very keen mind for the game and an unrelentingly positive spirit.”

Coach Pohl moved to Maine in the spring of 2005 from Montana, where he was the Head Volleyball coach for Nashua High School in Nashua, MT. During his 5 years with Nashua High School, he coached the team to the Divisional playoffs twice. He also started a middle school volleyball program to develop a feeder system into the high school program.

In addition to coaching in Montana, he was a certified NFHS Volleyball Official with the Montana Officials Association. He also played on numerous tournament teams around the state. One of these tournament teams competed at the Big Sky State Games three years in a row, where they advanced to the Championship Match every year, and won the tournament in 2002. The winner of the Big Sky State Games tournament receives an automatic berth in the State Games of America.

Pohl continues to play in volleyball leagues and tournaments around the state of Maine.

Pohl graduated high school in 1986 from Saint Patrick’s Academy in Sidney, NE. After high school, he spent almost nine years on active duty in the Air Force as a weather forecaster. During his time in the Air Force, he attended college whenever possible and graduated from the State University of New York with a B.S. in Information Systems. He is currently the Information Technology Officer for the National Weather Service field office in Gray, Maine. Pohl is also a certified meteorologist with the National Weather Service and enjoys filling in for meteorologists when they take vacation.
