Criminal Justice internship

Steven Goldberg '07 began his internship at Westbrook Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division (CID) in September of '06. He will continue working there after graduation as a patrol officer.

Was the internship what you expected?

Yes and no. I expected to learn a different side of police work that I was unfamiliar with. I did not expect to be hired full-time and to build such a good relationship with all the officers.

How does this internship play into your major?

It teaches me the practical skills of criminal justice, allowing me to get into the field more often and do hands-on work. The only way to truly learn in this field is to be on the streets practicing what you have learned.

Would you recommend interning?

Absolutely. You learn a lot that you can't learn in the classroom. It is a great opportunity to also get into your field, gain experience, and have a better shot at full-time employment after graduation.

What were you favorite/least favorite part of interning?

My favorite part was learning in an informal manner about police work by going out to lunch with the officers. I have also had great training that will help me in the field.
